Conditional Branching

With conditional branching you can set a path through your survey based on the answers a respondent has entered. In the survey editor, you can access this feature by clicking on the ‘Branching’ tab at the top of the editor.

To access the survey editor, go to the list surveys page, click on ‘options’ to the right of your survey and choose ‘Edit Questions’.

On the conditional branching page you will notice that all of your pages and questions are laid out in the editor. A couple of things to note:

  • You should only use this feature when you are happy that you have your survey questions added.
  • You cannot add branching to the last page of your survey.
  • You must have at least 2 pages in your survey for branching to work.

Adding Rules

To add a rule to a particular question, simply click on the ‘rules’ link to the left of it. The box around the question will be highlighted and show you any rules you may have already created. From here you can click on the link to add a new rule.

There are a number of options available to you when creating a rule which are:

Step 1 – Choose The Type Of Response

Respondent answers this question

If you want the rule to be activated when the respondent answers this question then choose this option.

Respondent does not answer this question

If you want the rule to be activated when the respondent does not answers this question then choose this option.

Respondent chooses:

This option only becomes available for multiple choice questions. Here you can set a rule to activate when a particular multiple choice option is chosen.

Respondent does not choose:

As above, this only works for multiple choice type questions. This one allows you to set a rule if a respondent does not choose a particular option.

Step 2 – Choose Action

Jump to this page:

This option allows you to jump to a particular page in the survey if a rule is activated.

Skip this page:

This option allows you to skip a particular page further on in the survey if a rule is activated.

Force survey finish

And finally this option will allow you to force the survey to finish if a rule is activated.
